Getting started
Who is Remote Recruitment?
Remote Recruitment is a recruitment agency that places South African professionals in full-time remote roles with UK and Irish businesses. It was founded by Emily van Eyssen. Our UK client-facing site is remoterecruitment.co.uk and our South African job seeker site is remoterecruitment.co.za.
Is Remote Recruitment legit, and does it cost anything?
Yes. Remote Recruitment never charges candidates. There is no fee to register, apply, interview or be placed, at any stage. If anyone asks you for money to get a job through Remote Recruitment, it isn’t us. Our training courses are optional extras and are never required to apply or be hired.
Where can I find your current remote jobs?
All our open roles are listed on our careers page at https://remote-recruitment.careers-page.com/. We also share new roles on our LinkedIn and social media pages.
Who can apply?
We currently place South African citizens living in South Africa. You need to be able to work full-time during UK business hours from a quiet home workspace.
What kinds of remote jobs do you place?
Anything that can be done remotely from a laptop, including admin and virtual assistant roles, executive assistants, customer service and support, sales and business development (SDR/BDR), digital marketing and content, bookkeeping and finance, HR and recruitment, IT support, and software and web development.
The hiring process
How does the hiring process work?
1) Apply with your CV on our careers page. 2) Our AI tools and a recruiter review your CV. 3) Shortlisted candidates are contacted and complete a screening. 4) First interview. 5) The client picks their top two candidates for a second interview, which may include a short trial task. 6) The client makes an offer. 7) You have an onboarding call where we explain contracts, invoicing and pay. 8) You start your new remote role, and we check in with you every month.
How long does it take to get hired?
It depends on the role and the client, but the process can take as little as two weeks from application to offer.
How long will it take to hear back after I apply?
Timelines vary by role and client. If you’re shortlisted, we’ll contact you to invite you to a screening. Keep an eye on your email and WhatsApp so you don’t miss the invite.
How can I improve my chances of being shortlisted?
Keep your CV clear and up to date, list the tools and software you use, show any remote or international work experience, and complete your screening as soon as you’re invited. Strong written English and AI-tool skills (such as ChatGPT) are increasingly valued by UK employers.
Contracts, pay and tax
Will I be an employee?
No. You are engaged as an independent contractor, not an employee. That means you work under an independent contractor agreement arranged through Remote Recruitment, and no PAYE is deducted from your pay.
How and when will I be paid?
You’re paid monthly in South African Rands, straight into your South African bank account. Remote Recruitment handles the contractor payroll; you submit a monthly invoice, and we’ll explain exactly how invoicing works in your onboarding call.
Do I pay tax as an independent contractor in South Africa?
Yes. Because you’re an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own tax with SARS. Most contractors register as provisional taxpayers, which usually means paying tax twice a year. Many contractors set aside around 20–25% of each payment for tax. Remote Recruitment doesn’t give tax advice, so we recommend speaking to a registered tax practitioner.
Do I pay anything to Remote Recruitment out of my salary?
No. There is no cost to you at any stage. The UK or Irish client pays Remote Recruitment, and Remote Recruitment pays you.
Working remotely for a UK company
What hours will I work?
Roles are full-time and follow UK business hours. South Africa is one hour ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and two hours ahead during UK winter, so the working day fits comfortably in South African daytime hours.
What equipment do I need?
Your own reliable laptop, a stable fibre or LTE internet connection with backup power for load-shedding (for example a UPS, inverter or power bank for your router), a good headset, and a quiet space to work and take video calls.
Do I need to live in a particular city?
No. You can work from anywhere in South Africa, as long as you have reliable internet, backup power and a quiet workspace.
What support do I get once I’ve started?
We onboard you before your first day and check in with you every month. If any issue comes up with your UK client, you can contact Remote Recruitment directly for help.
